About a week ago I wrote about how most kids with Attention Deficit Disorder are somewhat obsessed with some hobby, sport or other interest. I suggested using that obsession as an aid in homeschooling kids with ADD. Here’s a link to the original post in case you haven’t read it yet: http://homeschoolingaddkids.com/blog/?p=84 .
After reading my blog post, child clinical psychologist Steven E. Curtis, PhD, author of the book Understanding Your Child’s Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Children with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges, posted a comment about my post mentioning that he recommended similar strategies to parents of children seen in his practice. Dr. Curtis then posted an interesting article related to my post on his own blog. The name of the post is “Discourage Your Child’s Obsession?” and is worth a read.
Anyway, last week we said that unit studies are one of the best ways to teach your child since you can choose units related to his obsession. And we explained how to go about creating your own unit studies by using the Internet. The disadvantage of doing it yourself is the amount of time it takes. You could easily spend several hours surfing the web looking for sites with info, games, and audio and video files related to your child’s interest. Yet, many unit studies already exist and can be purchased for under $5.00, while others are free.
Here are some links to unit studies, below. I chose them after searching through dozens of sites and included only the unit studies that seemed would be of the most interest to kids.
